System Design & Consulting Services

The ocean is full of vessels (some no longer floating…) with failing and/or inadequate energy systems.  Electrical issues are the number one cause of problems on boats large enough to have an electrical system. This is entirely avoidable. Very often the beginning of the path to failure is simply the lack of careful planning.

Such planning must be done by experienced people, with knowledge of the desired system functions, electrical loads, space and budget limitations, etc.

Every energy system is unique.  An assessment must be made of the above factors, to determine the energy storage requirements (battery capacity), recharging options (both renewable and non-renewable), energy monitoring needs, and the safe configuration of it all, to prevent irritating surprises, system failures, injuries, or worse…

See the above system diagram. We can provide others for you to peruse if you would like to see more systems that we have designed. Then, in communication with an OceanPlanet Energy technician, you can have your own unique system design created.  It may be similar to something we’ve done previously and fairly quick, or you may be in need of a more comprehensive design solution optimized specifically for your unique needs.

Our team has collectively spent multiple decades and hundreds of thousands of ocean sailing miles (including two solo circumnavigations) to learn this stuff. Nigel Calder has literally written the book on boat electrical systems. While we can’t do custom design work for free, we do offer to credit back for some of the consulting design work when you purchase your system.

We dig deeply into each project.  Often, we’re already working hard on interesting projects like yours, and so can’t grab the phone right away.  So, take advantage of our system loads calculator, and our System Details Contact Form to let us know your plans and how we can help. We’ll get back to you soon and set up a time to discuss your project.

If you are looking for a full system review, detailed recommendations for upgrades, and diagrams/drawings, we charge a consulting fee of $150/hour.  Some of which can be credited back when you purchase product (10% for every $10k you spend on product, up to 50% back).

A first initial discussion is free, and sometimes a fee isn’t necessary.  For instance, if you only need to spec out solar panels and no diagram is required, we can often put something together with no consulting fee.  We look forward to hearing about your project and cruising plans.
